what advice have you for me, who is being asked by their best friend of two decades to pursue a romantic relationship. Theoretically it seems like the relationship would work but there is something in my gut that says not to do it.

It's important to trust your instincts and to prioritize your own feelings and well-being. If you have a gut feeling that pursuing a romantic relationship with your best friend might not be the best idea, it may be wise to listen to that intuition.
Before making a decision, it's a good idea to have an honest conversation with your friend about your concerns and reservations. Explain your feelings and why you're hesitant about taking the relationship to a romantic level. It's important to have a clear understanding of each other's expectations and boundaries, and to be open and honest about what each of you is looking for in a relationship.
Keep in mind that pursuing a romantic relationship with a close friend can be challenging and carries a risk of damaging the friendship if things don't work out. Consider seeking the advice of a trusted friend or a therapist, and take your time to make a well-informed decision that's right for you.
